The BEAST system, assembled for 2023’s UnFestival

From June 26–28 2024, BEAST are proud to present Body-Space-Action-Agency, a new series of concerts and workshops, presented on the full BEAST speaker system in the Elgar Concert Hall.

Wednesday 26th June

To kickstart the series, we welcome Artemi-Maria Gioti and Aaron Einbond for a workshop exploring their research into Machine Learning (ML), approaches to its use in composition, and discussion of the affordances and ethics of AI and ML.

At 6pm, Xenia Pestova Bennett performs a programme of works for piano and electronics, including selections of her own work and Annea Lockwood’s Ear-Walking Woman. This is followed by our second concert, with performances of Aaron Einbond’s Prestidigitation and Artemi-Maria Gioti’s Bias II.

Thursday 27th June

Day Two opens with a workshop from Xenia Pestova Bennett: a discussion of performance gesture, physicality, presence, and movement when performing music using controllers, laptops, and pedals, both with and without traditional instruments.

Concert three features premiere performances of new multichannel works by current BEAST students and staff. Then, at 8pm composer and BEAST alumni YongGyu Gregory Kim joins us from Korea to present a selection of his multimedia works, with live electronics, acoustic instruments, and visuals.

Friday 28th June

For the final day, we move over to Pan-pan in Digbeth for our closing party, featuring live performances from P.A. Tremblay and Sylvain Pohu, and improvised electronic music by University of Birmingham students.
