Workshop 1

Shazam Walks Listening Party & DJ Workshop with Jake Williams

What is music’s place in the urban soundscape?    How can sound walking be used for music discovery?   Is DJing a deep listening practice?

BEAST composer Jake Williams leads this workshop informed by Ultra-red’s Protocols for a Listening Session, Pauline Oliveros’ Deep Listening and his own DJ practice. Firstly, you will take part in a listening and response session using field recordings of music playing from mobile phones and portable sound systems in public spaces. The recordings, along with the original music tracks (discovered via the music discovery app Shazam), will then be used as audio material for a creative DJ workshop.  You will learn some basic techniques in a free digital DJ software and explore how playing encourages listening.  At the end we will have a short, collaborative DJ jam session.

You will be asked to download and install the free Rekordbox software and a .zip file of recordings prior to the session.

Only 12 spaces available! Link to sign-up: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/jake-williams-workshop-beast-feast-tickets-150690426121
